Our charity work
We’re proud to support good causes across the world, helping those in need in the communities that host our groups.
Part of what makes Edwin Doran Sports Tours so rewarding is meeting local people and embracing their culture. Often this highlights how charity work can be of huge benefit to local communities. We support good causes around the world, with many specific projects linked to tour destinations. Some of these have sprung from connections made by players on our sports trips, while others enrich the relationships between Edwin Doran and hosting schools or the wider community.
Goedgedacht, Western Cape, South Africa
Set on an old Cape Dutch farm, this busy community development centre tackles poverty amongst rural children and youths. Many of the children’s parents have fallen foul of the ‘dop system’ on the wine farms of the Western Cape, whereby workers are given alcohol as a ‘benefit’ of employment.
Lelapa restaurant, Langa Township, South Africa
We are proud to have helped Sheila Mahloane, a charismatic local entrepreneur, set up her own restaurant in the Langa Township. It is now a thriving business offering traditional local cuisine and serving up a slice of township life.
Tsunami relief, Sri Lanka
Following the devastating tsunami in 2004 our touring sides have helped to rebuild playgrounds at schools. Edwin Doran Sport Tours also helps with the distribution of sporting kit amongst local communities.
SKRUM, Swaziland
This charity combines inspirational rugby coaching for local children with a health education programme that aims to tackle the high rates of HIV/AIDS infection in Swaziland. The project offers many orphans and vulnerable children hope for the future and the chance to develop their life skills.
School donations, Pacific Islands
Edwin Doran Sports Tours makes a donation to every school that hosts a touring side. Often visiting sports travel groups also raise funds themselves, which they hand over to host schools, or make a donation of sporting equipment.
Why we do it
Whether your team is going on tour to Malaysia, Argentina or Jamaica we encourage all our groups to support charitable causes in the destinations they visit and give something back to the local communities. We believe this enriches the trip and provides students with a unique life experience opened up to them through a love of sport.
