Edwin Doran MasterClass GSA Netball Tournament plays host to stars of the past, present and future. The two day event was aimed at Year 8 and 9 pupils, helping to raise the profile of girls’ sport providing junior players the chance to experience a competitive tournament and develop skills in a safe environment.
“This is the third year that we have attended the GSA netball tournament. Each year we have had a great experience and this year was no different. From a coaching session with Pamela Cookey on our arrival to high quality games and umpiring, our girls had another fantastic experience. Already my Year 8 team are talking about when they return next year!”
Caroline Castell, City of London School
The sporting talent, however, was not purely present on the court – the girls were incredibly lucky to have the guidance of past and current England Netball Captains’: Amanda Newton and Pamela Cookey. Both the Year 8 and Year 9 netball tournaments were fiercely competitive, with several closely fought matches and narrow defeats. The impressive array of talent on show did not go unnoticed, with Cookey identifying several ‘potential future stars’. A close final in the Year 9 trophy competition saw St Paul’s ‘do the double’ – following their victory in the Year 8 competition last year. New entrants to the tournament, Bury Grammar school, won the Cup, whilst tournament regulars St Catherine’s Bramley went home with the Plate. In the Year 8 competition, it was Marist school that came out on top, with St Catherine’s Bramley winning the Cup and Dame Allen’s school earning a well-deserved Plate win. Alongside an action-packed itinerary of team-building activities, the girls were accommodated in the beautiful Condover Hall in rural Shrewsbury.
“The organisation was outstanding. Although it was our first time, it felt like we had done it before because someone was on hand at all times!”
Laura Boyd, Gateways school
