Earlier in the summer a group of staff enjoyed an inspection visit to Sri Lanka, an increasingly popular destination for sports tours. Craig Bones, one of our Sales Managers, has written about his experience.
On Saturday 19th May we boarded our Sri Lanka Airlines flight to Colombo where we were heading to visit sports facilities, the hotels we use and also to experience some of the excursions that we include in our tours.
Sri Lanka is a gem to behold. Travelling from the airport to our first excursions and hotel, we were met by the beauty of the rainforest and the hustle and bustle of the local tuk tuks that seem to come from every angle. 30 minutes into our journey we had to stop suddenly - two wild bull elephants on the roadside, grazing away without a care in the world. Totally amazing!
Every hotel that we visited in our time on the ground in Sri Lanka was extremely warm and welcoming with the staff extremely friendly.
Excursions on our trip consisted of a visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which is a lovely venue and a great place to enjoy lunch with a difference, as at lunchtime all the elephants are brought down to the river for washing and rest, so you watch this whilst enjoying the local cuisine.
Our next stop was teh Foundation of Goodness. This charity helps develop young people through sports and education following the horrendous Tsunami back in 2004. The types of activity that can be done by touring sides include a beach cleaning programme, visits with the Elders, painting of a school classroom or English training with the village children.
Our final excursion was visiting Kosgoda and the Turtle Hatchery. Here you are given a great insight into the fabulous conservation projects that are being delivered to help increase the population as well as helping to release new born turtles into the ocean.
All the cricket grounds that we visited are situated with breath-taking views. Hockey, Netball and Football are also played all year round in Sri Lanka and we as a company are working closely with the local authorities to further enhance their sports which in turn will bring further revenue to the country.
The visit for me was a humbling experience, meeting great people who will help you will anything - nothing was every a problem. The sports, excursions and hotel we visited were mesmerising and I would fully recommend any touring side to consider Sri Lanka as a future touring destination.
Sri Lanka, I will definitely be back!
