Cordoba is Argentina's colonial capital, a picturesque city located on the banks of the River Primero (aka Río Siqioa) and on the edge of the mountain range known as the Sierra Chica. The Pampas consists mostly of flat agricultural land and contains the provinces of Buenos Aires and La Pampa as well as parts of Santa Fe and Córdoba.
Popularly known as "La Docta", Córdoba was the first capital of the country, founded before Buenos Aires, and is now Argentina's second most important city. Its location provides the arena for many adventure and/or extreme sports.
Many of the most interesting colonial buildings within the city can be found in the Calle Obispo Trejos, including El Cabildo (the Town Hall) and the Casa del Obispo Mercadillo.
Also worth seeing are the churches of the Compañía de Jésus, San Francisco and San Roque. Numerous Jesuit churches can be visited in the area ~ Alta Gracia, 35km (22 miles) southwest of the city, is one of the best known.
Argentina's first university, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba was founded here was established by Jesuits in 1612, and the city now has two universities.
