Malaysia offers a wide mix of fascinating cultures, scenery and sightseeing, and this is especially true of Kuala Lumpur, its capital city, situated in the Selangor province, midway along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, at the confluence of the Klang and Gombek rivers. It is approximately 35 kms from the coast and is the largest city in the nation, with a population of over 1.5 million people drawn from all of Malaysia's many ethnic groups.
'KL' is a bustling city with a mixture of luxury hotels, modern shopping malls and street markets. There are many attractions to keep the visitor entertained, as well as a wide selection of shops. The best place to shop is in the Golden Triangle area of the city, with Bukit Bintang the key street to look out for, and there are also a wide selection of shops at the Twin Towers.
The traditional heart of the city is Merdeka Square, easily spotted because of the 95m flag pole, reputedly the world's tallest. KL is a relatively easy city to navigate, with major north-south thoroughfares assisting in the speedy movement of people. South of the square is the historic KL train station, while further west is the 'green belt' area, where you'll find the Lake Gardens, National Museum and Monument, and the Malaysian Parliament.
Nightlife in Kuala Lumpa is varied with many bars and restaurants. If you don't mind haggling for a bargain, especially for fake designer goods such as bags and t-shirts, then a visit to the bustling Chinese night market is a must. Once again, the Golden Triangle offers the largest concentration of bars and restaurants.
KL has a mainly elevated Light Rail Transit and a separate Monorail so travelling around the city is easy.
