Situated at the mouth of the River Shannon, Limerick stands as a dynamic educational, economic, social and recreational base serving the mid western region and the surrounding areas.
With just under half of the total population being under 30 years of age, Limerick is a young vibrant City with a changing face focusing primarily on education, infrastructure and social and leisure activities.
When it come to sports, Limerick has a wide array of sporting facilities, including a 50m swimming pool, a new racecourse and many fine golf courses, as well as Go-Karting and 10-pin bowling.
For real adventure, based on the shores of Lough Derg and nestled at the foot of Cragg hillside in Killaloe, the Activity Centre at the University of Limerick offers accommodation (from May to August) and activity sessions in water- and land-based activities. Catering especially for groups, you can enjoy such activities as sailing, powerboating, windsurfting, kayaking and canoeing, as well as high-ropes, Team challenges and archery, plus much more besides.
As you'd expect in a very historical city, there are some amazing things to see. The countryside is littered with castles some of which have been renovated and are used for entertainment, for example Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, which was the first place to offer medieval banquets. The excellent folk park portrays historical life in Ireland and next door is one of Ireland's most famous pubs, Durty Nellie's.
Thomond Park is the home of Munster for the Heineken Cup. They have never been beaten there earning the name Fortress Munster!
