WHAT TO DO

  • Rock Tour ~ The basic tour lasts around two hours and takes in thousands of years of Rock evolution, including the famous Barbary Ape Den, habitat to Europe's only free roaming primates, St Michael's Cave with its stunning stalagmites and stalactites and once home to Neanderthal and Neolithic man. You will also look out at Europa Point, the southernmost tip of Europe with its breathtaking views across the Strait to North Africa.
  • Dolphin Watching ~ Visitors are able to go out into the Bay in one of the many dolphin safari boats to watch pods of dolphin at play. The tour takes approximately 2 hours.
  • Lower St. Michael's Cave ~ Discovered in 1942, accidentally, whilst blasting a second entrance at St Michael's Cave in order to prepare it for use as an emergency hospital during the Second World War.  Organised tours normally last around 3 hours, and involves minor climbing and scrambling with ropes.  Maximum group size of 10 per tour.
  • The Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned ~ Built on the original site of the chief mosque but was demolished during the Great Siege. It was later rebuilt as a Cathedral, although some of the early structures can still be seen.
  • Gibralter Museum ~ Situated on the original site of a Moorish bathhouse a short walk from Main Street.
  • The Military Heritage Centre ~ Housed in one of the many Batteries found in the Rock. The Battery still houses the original hoists used to arm the gun, as well as the shells and other artefacts used in those days. The armoury displays a selection of weapons used by the British Army in Gibraltar and there are also relics dating from the Great Siege of 1783 to the present day.
  • Cable Car ~ The best way to the 'Top of the Rock' and a must-see attraction for all visitors to Gibraltar, the journey takes you 412m above sea level in approximately 6 minutes offering spectacular views all the way.
  • World War 11 Tunnels ~ Excavated during 1939-1944 by the Royal Engineers and a contingent of Canadian Engineers, they are an extension to The Great Siege Tunnels excavated during The Great Siege of 1779-83.  The Rock is has a total of a 32 mile-long network of tunnels.  The tour is conducted by a guide from H.M. Forces.
  • Beaches ~ There are six beaches on the island, four of which are sandy: Sandy Bay, Eastern Beach, the picturesque village of Catalan Bay, and Western Beach.   The warm climate and beachfront cafes offer an opportunity to relax and take it slow.
  • Sailing Schools ~ Several schools offer classes for all categories.
  • Day Excursions ~ Ferries back to mainland Spain, Morocco and Tangiers all offer the opportunity to pop into Europe or North Africa for a short while.
