Hluhluwe Umfolozi

DESTINATION INFORMATION

Set in the heart of Zululand, this is the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah.  Established in 1895, game viewing is the prime attraction.

The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve covers some 96,000 hectares, contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora, and became world renowned for its white rhino conservation.  Viewing hides overlook waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.

Previously managed as two separate parks, the Hluhluwe in the north, and Umfolozi in the south were joined into one large game reserve.  Hluhluwe is characterised by hilly topography, and this northen section of the park is noted for its wide variety of both bird and animal life.  Umfolozi lies west of the town of Mtubatuba.

The region is generally hot in summer, and mild to cool in winter, although cold spells do occur.

The wide range of plant life in the park gives rise to a diversity of mammals, birdlife, reptiles and amphibians. The Big Five ~ lion, rhino (black & white),  elephant, buffalo and leopard ~ are all to be seen in the park, as well as a variety of other species, including cheetah, wild dog and giraffe. It is one of the best places in the world to see nyala, as well as blue wildebeest, zebra, large numbers of impala, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, hyena and jackal.

There are no accommodation facilities within the game reserve, but our groups are accommodated in the Ubizane Wildlife Reserve, which boasts a wide variety of game, which you can view the game from the comfort of equipped game viewing Land Rovers, on foot for a more thrilling encounter or on horseback for a wonderfully unique experience.  Zululand Safari Lodge offers comfortable accommodation with the option to self-cater. Groups will love the relaxed atmosphere of this traditional African self-catering reserve with its dining boma, swimming pool for those sweltering Zululand days, and comfortable 'rondavels' (round thatched chalets) looking up at the sweep of Ubizane Mountain.   The lodge consists of 24 self-catering chalets - fully equipped kitchen, twin beds, shower, bath and toilet. All bedrooms are en-suite and all have ceiling fans.
