The Cameron Highlands is the largest and most famous hill resort in Malaysia. Discovered by British surveyor, William Cameron in 1885, these highlands still retain much of the charm of an English village. Subsequently made famous by the Scottish Planter families who planted and manufactured tea in the early days, much of this history still remains, particularly in the style of architecture in this area of natural beauty.
Cameron Highlands is the smallest district in the state of Pahang, located in the north-western corner of the state. The district is made up of three main towns, and several smaller farming communities. Ringlet is one of the main agricultural hubs, and is the main flower and vegetable producing town in the region.
Tanah Rata is the administrative capital of the Cameron Highlands, and as well as being the location for most of the service buildings, most of the jungle treks and waterfall trails start from here.
Most of the hotels and restaurants can be found in Brinchang, about 10 minutes from Tanah Rata. Further up the Blue Valley in the small agricultural communities is where many of the markets selling local produce, and the flower and butterfly gardens can be found.
Each part of the area has its own charm. Nature trails will take you to highland forests, with their resident animals and flora, and lead you to places where you will see spectacular views of the valleys.
One thing not to be missed is the opportunity to visit one of the tea plantations, perhaps Bharat Tea Estate, located between Ringlet and Tanah Rata.
Other activities include mountain hiking and jungle trekking, and the Saturday Night Markets buzz with activity after dark.
