Nadi

DESTINATION INFORMATION

The island of Viti Levu is the largest of the Fiji Islands, with Suva as its capital.  Sitting on the western side of Viti Levu, the town itself is small in comparison,  however, Nadi is the gateway to Fiji.  Because of its proximity to the international airport, it essentially caters for tourists, with facilities on offer including restaurants, nightlife, duty free shopping, sightseeing tours and inter-island cruises.

Once a small community of farmers and shopkeepers, Nadi is now Fiji's third-largest city.  Nadi town is perhaps the best place in Fiji to pick up souvenirs and there are good places to eat.

The area surrounding Nadi is rolling and verdant, and is a patchwork of sugar cane fields.  There are a lot of tourist resorts in the vicinity, although the beaches are relatively unpopulated, and the mountainous region, known as the Nausori Highlands, is quite spectacular.

Having a large Indian population, Nadi is a religious centre for Muslims and Hindus. The major place of worship for Hindus is the new Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple on the east side of town, whilst the Hindu shrine, reportedly the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, welcomes visitors.

WHAT TO DO

  • Momi Gun Emplacements ~ Although an invasion never occurred, these guns, bunkers and gun emplacements were installed to repel a World War II invasion by the Japanese.
  • Mt Victoria ~ Fiji's highest peak, and home to three native reserves.
  • Viseisei Village ~ regarded by most Fijians as the 'foundation village' of Fijian heritage and culture.
  • Waqadra Botanical Gardens ~ Fiji's largest privately owned gardens, which open from Monday to Saturday.
  • Tour into the hinterland ~ Consider taking a half day or full day guided tour with Isaia Seru, a Fijian man with a great deal of local knowledge, who can take you around in his 4 WD vehicle to the picturesque Nausori Highlands, Sabeto Valley, Sigatoka Valley or Navala Village,  one of the few remaining villages with tradtional thatched roof bures (homes).
