Just over an hour east of Port Elizabeth is the Kariega Game Reserve, a 'Big 5' reserve. The game drives at Kariega are unusual as the animals appear not to be frightened when you come close to them, and are actually quite friendly. There are plenty of antelope ~ expect to see gemsbok, nyala, springbok, impala, blesbuck, water buck, kudu and eland, as well as zebra, monkey and giraffe.
The afternoon 'sundowner' river cruise provides a great opportunity to see birdlife. They have no crocodiles or hippos in the river. Kariega is an excellent place for a mid-tour rest.
Other activities available within the reserve are canoeing, mountain biking, hiking and horse riding. Not to be missed is the dinner under the stars in the outdoor Boma.
Accommodation is usually in a chalet, with each chalet having three twin bedded rooms with two bathrooms; one with a bath, the other with shower. There is also a central area where the lounge and dining area are situated, and a kitchen. The balconies front and rear offer great views, and there is also a pool. The accommodation is graded 4*.
