DESTINATION INFORMATION

The name Argentina derives from the Latin argentum ~ silver ~ when the first Spanish conquistadors discovered the Río de la Plata ~ River of Silver. The country is back now back on the tourist map since the recent economic problems in the country has made it affordable again.

Located between the Andes mountain range in the west and the southern Atlantic Ocean in the east and south, and bordered by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south, Argentina certainly contains the most diverse of interests for visitors.

There is so much to enjoy, from the chic Buenos Aires, with its colourful neighbourhoods ~ and houses ~ its history and Evita, to the long days riding with the gauchos in the grasslands of the Pampas.  You can visit the birthplace of revolutionary Che Guevara in Rosario, the resting place of a dinosaur even bigger than T. Rex, or take train journeys to the clouds in Salta or through the emptiness of Patagonia.

The jagged Andean mountain peaks of the Chaitén Massif offer a huge contrast to the lush forest vegetation and numerous waterfalls of Iguazu, the dense forests lakes and glaciers to Patagonia, where you will find the largest known variety of protected wildlife.  The Pampas in the centre, with the gauchos and the traditional estancias.

The climate is sub-tropical in the north, with year-round rain, whilst the temperate central area of Argentina is hot and humid in the summer (October to March).

Argentine culture is exemplified by its music and dance, particularly the Tango. To foreigners, Tango refers to a particular dance, but the music, together with the lyrics, often sung in a kind of slang called lunfardo, are what the locals mean by Tango.

TRAVEL

We use Aerolineas Argentinas as our main airline as they operate a very effective domestic network giving us particularly attractive prices.  We also use the Brazilian airlines, and TAM as well as British Airways and Lan Chile.

You will always have to stop en-route as no airlines fly non-stop from  London to Buenos Aires.

Flights to Buenos Aires:

  • British Airways ~ From London Heathrow to Buenos Aires, via Sao Paolo in Brazil, 4 times weekly, departing on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • Aerolineas Argentinas ~ from London Gatwick via Madrid, daily.  Connecting flights to other cities within Argentina operate several times daily from Buenos Aires.
  • TAM ~ Commencing 28 October, 2006, this Brazilian airline will operate a new daily, non-stop service  from London Heathrow to Sao Paolo in Brazil.  From there you would be able to  travel on to Buenos Aires.
  • Lan Chile ~ from London Heathrow via Madrid and Santiago, daily, except Sunday.  Another option is to fly with BA to Miami, then connect with Lan Argentina to Buenos Aires, which operates several times daily.
  • Iberia ~ From London Heathrow to Buenos Aires, via Madrid, daily.
  • European airlines offer stopover services via their European gateway.

FIXTURES

As many as you want, be they in cricket, football, hockey or rugby.

Their standards for soccer are legendary.  Hockey and rugby are played at all levels in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.  Cricket is available in superb traditional British country clubs such as the Hurlingham in Buenos Aires and the Prince of Wales in Santiago.  The standard of sport varies from country to country.

Hernan Vidou, based in Buenos Aires, co-ordinates all our arrangements in Argentina.  His father, Horacio, was descended from the Basques, which is probably why he was a hooker on the rugby field.  Hernan was a fly-half and a winger.  He made Argentine rugby history when he kicked all five goals for his country to beat Will Carling's England squad in August 1990 in Buenos Aires.  He has the same rate of success with us, and we've been working successfully together for nearly 15 years.

I particularly remember a brilliant man called Jimmy Capanero who was the most passionate educator I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

El Negro is one of the most important people in Salta.  When Edwin's daughter was on her gap year, she stayed with him and his family.  On the night of the 1995 Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham, Edwin entertained him and his local rugby team at home, and they had the most incredible international rugby party!  We are the only UK sports tour company to visit Salta, and El Negro looks after them brilliantly.

Testimonial:  "In Chile and Argentina, all 21 fixtures (hockey and rugby) were at the correct level.  Of the seven hosts, six gave us excellent hospitality and one very good."  Tour Manager

ACCOMMODATION

Invariably, particularly in Buenos Aires, schools have an English headmaster, and education is operated on a dual medium system with half a day in Spanish and the other half in English.

Consequently, schools usually billet, whilst the accommpanying staff and Clubs stay in very good hotels at very competitive prices.

Some examples of the hotels we have used successfully in the past include:

  • Buenos Aires ~ This year we used The Mayflower Suites and the Hotel Presidente. However, with Buenos Aires having such a large choice of hotels in the city, we are constantly searching for alternative accommodation that offers a good standard at the right price.
  • Iguazu ~ Hotel Cataratas and the Hotel Esturion.
  • Salta ~ The groups are likely to be billetted, and the staff accommodated in the Hotel Altos de Balarce.
  • Tucuman ~ The groups are likely to be billetted, and staff accommodated in the Tucuman Centre Hotel.
  • Cordoba ~ The groups are likely to be billetted, and staff accommodated in the American Cordoba Park Hotel.

Testimonial:  Of the seven hotels we used on our tour, I would say that four were excellent, three very good and one good.  We were billetted five times and I would evaluated that three hosts were very good and two were excellent".  Tour Manager
