DESTINATION INFORMATION

Steeped in a history that has evolved from its strategic location at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where Europe meets Africa, Gibraltar offers visitors breathtaking scenery, wildlife and architecture.

The town centre is largely protected by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and part of a continual restoration programme. Its original city walls and fortifications date back to the 1800's including Casemates Gates, Charles V Wall and Kings Bastion.  Gibraltar has been of strategic importance throughout its long military history. The Rock has endured many sieges, the most famous being the Great Siege of 1783. Visitors can appreciate the great feat of engineering achieved at the Great Siege Tunnels, as indeed in all the other tunnels and chambers that have been dug in the Rock.

There are several cafes and restaurants at Marina Bay, close to the sports stadium, and at the end of Main Street in Casemates Square, you will find a wide range of English style restaurants, cafes, burger bars and pizza restaurants, as well as being the hub of nightlife in Gibralter.

As a VAT-free jurisdiction, Gibraltar is popular with visitors looking for a bargain!

FIXTURES

Schools in Gibraltar do not have the February or May half-term break as in the UK, providing an opportunity for schools to compete against local schools while the schools are still in session, although they do have a half-term break at the end of October.

Most sport takes place at the Victoria Stadium, which is in the final stages of refurbishment and will offer excellent facilities on completion.  There are two indoor halls as well as two indoor cricket nets, a floodlit astro football pitch and smaller training pitch, and a six-lane athletics track.  Further facilities planned for 2008.

The two main sports are soccer and basketball, followed by hockey, netball, cricket and rugby respectively.
