DESTINATION INFORMATION

For a small country, the United Kingdom has a lot to offer tourists.

In addition to the attractions listed on our main UK Destinations (see map above), there are many other places within Britain that are worthy of a visit.  Some of these include:

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

  • Shakespeare's birthplace, where William was born in 1564 and lived with his family.  The house has been painstakingly restored with original and replica items from the period, and the gardens are stocked with traditional plants and flowers mentioned in the plays.
  • Anne Hathaway's Cottage, where William courted his bride-to-be.  Located in Shottery, just a mile away, this beautiful thatched farmhouse contains many rare family items of furniture that date back to Anne's time.  To the rear of the cottage there is a growing Willow Cabin that takes its inspiration from Twelfth Night
  • Some of the other properties owned by Shakespeare Birthplace Trust include:  Nash's House, which was owned by Shakespeare's granddaughter's first husband, Sir Thomas Nash.  Adjacent to Nash's House is is the site of New Place, the site of Shakespeare's impressive town house, which he purchased in 1597 and where he later died.  Unfortunately the house is no longer here, only a few foundations, however on of the highlights of the Great Garden to the rear are sculptures inspired by Shakespeare's plays.  Hall's Croft, the family home of his eldest daughter Susanna and her husband, Dr John Hall, and finally, Mary Arden's House and Countryside Museum.  This is the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother, and a visit to neighbouring Palmer's Farm gives an opportunity to experience 500 years of rural life and farming history.

LIVERPOOL

  • Metropolitan Cathedral ~ Consecrated in 1967, this modern cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool, the spiritual leader of all the faithful of the Northern Province of the Catholic Church in England.  Its circular plan was conceived in response to the Second Vatican Council's requirements for a more intimate integration of the congregation with the clergy.  Twelve chapels are built in between the buttresses that support the tent-shaped spire (which represents the crown of thorns of Jesus) like tent poles.  Facing the cathedral, nicknamed by the locals as 'Paddy's wigwam' due to its tent-like design, at the opposite end of Hope Street is the Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool, the city's Anglican cathedral.
  • The Beatle's Story ~ The story is told in 18 separate features including the streets of Hamburg, a full-size replica of the Cavern Club, Abbey Road studios, 'Beatlemania', the psychedelic years, a walk-through Yellow Submarine in it's underwater setting, the White Room dedicated to John Lennon and the new 'Paul McCartney: The Solo Years' section.
  • Magical Mystery Tour ~ What better way to experience the sights and sounds of Beatles Liverpool than on a vintage Magical Mystery Tour Bus, identical to the one used in the 1967 film. The tour visits many of the places associated with the Fab 4 as they grew up, met and formed the band, stopping at some of their childhood homes, schools and places that inspired some of their most memorable songs like Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. Approx. 2 hours every afternoon.
  • World Museum Liverpool ~ (formerly Liverpool Museum) has thousands of fascinating exhibits, many on display for the first time. New galleries include World Cultures, the Bug House, a new Aquarium, the Weston Discovery Centre, Clore Natural History Centre and Treasure House Theatre with their thrilling hands-on experiences.
  • Merseyside Maritime Museum ~ Housed in a former bonded warehouse in part of the historic Albert Dock on the banks of the River Mersey. The museum tells the story of one of the world's greatest ports and the people who used it.  The museum's collections reflect the international importance of Liverpool as a gateway to the world, including the city's role in the transatlantic slave trade and emigration.
  • Tate Liverpool ~ The largest galleries of modern and contemporary art outside London is housed in beautiful converted warehouse in the historic Albert Dock. The displays and exhibitions show modern and contemporary art from 1900 to the present day, including photography, printmaking, video, performance and installation as well as painting and sculpture.
  • Mersey Ferry ~ There's no better way to experience Liverpool and Merseyside than from the deck of the Mersey Ferry. Take the Ferry Across the Mersey Experience to learn about the city region's fascinating history, see its spectacular sights and discover its unique character.
  • Sports venues ~ Experience Everton Football Club at first hand with a tour around Goodison Park.   The Liverpool F.C. Museum & Tour Centre celebrates all things Liverpool, past & present.  The stadium tour offers a chance to visit the dressing room, walk down the tunnel to the sound of the crowd, and see the cups and tropies from the past which are on permanent display.  For rugby fans, St Helens RFC was founded in 1873, and moved to their current ground at Knowsley Road in 1890.  A full range of merchandise is on sale at the Saints Superstore, where you can buy a range of items.

WARWICK:

  • Warwick Castle ~  Britain's greatest Mediaeval experience.  From a Mediaeval household in the Kingmaker exhibition to a Victorian 'Royal Weekend Party'. Kingmaker feasts and Highwayman Suppers most Fridays and Saturdays.

BATH:

  • Roman Baths ~ Around Britain's only hot spring, the Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex that still flows with natural hot water. See the water's source and walk where Romans walked on the ancient stone pavements. The extensive ruins and treasures from the spring are beautifully preserved and presented using the best of modern interpretation.
  • Thermae Bath Spa ~ Britain's original and most remarkable Spa ~ the only place in the UK where you can bathe in natural hot waters. Thermae Bath Spa is a combination of the best of the historic Spa with a state of the art building offering modern comforts and facilities including four thermal baths and a full range of complementary therapies.
  • Jane Austen Centre ~ Celebrating Bath's most famous resident, experience a snapshot of life during Regency times and explores how living in this magnificent city affected Jane Austen's life and writing. 'Live' Guides, costume, film, a superb giftshop and an authentic period atmosphere.
  • American Museum, Claverton Manor ~ The museum shows, largely by way of period rooms, how Americans lived from the early New England Settlers to the eve of the Civil War. Other attractions include an 18th Century Massachusetts Tavern and a wonderful collection of quilts and a gallery of Native American objects.
