DESTINATION INFORMATION

'The Spice of the Caribbean'

Grenada dwarfs the chain of islands spinning off to the north-east known as the Grenadines.  The three islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are located at the southern extremity of the Windward Islands, a mere 100 miles north of Venezuela.

Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers, and bordered by stunning beaches and dotted with picturesque towns.  In the interior of this volcanic island are cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful mountain lakes imaginable. The horseshoe-shaped harbour of the capital, St. George's, is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes.

This verdant island offers more spices per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, of which nutmeg is the most abundant, although Grenada has also long been a major source of cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa.

St. George's is thought to be one of the most picturesque harbours in the Caribbean, and is dotted with bright colourful buildings. It is located on the southwest corner, near one of the island's best beaches, Grand Anse

At Grand Etang, an extinct volcano cradles a beautiful 30 acre lake. There are several waterfalls in Grenada, the most spectacular of which are the Annandale Falls, where the 15m cascade flows into a mountain stream, and the Mount Carmel Waterfall, the island's highest waterfall, which has two falls cascading over 21m into clear pools below.

Directly north of the town of Sauteurs is a steep cliff face that descends vertically into the sea for more than 100 feet. It was from the top of the cliff ~ known at Carib's Leap or Leaper's Hill ~ that Grenada's last remaining Carib Indians hurled themselves in 1651, preferring suicide to domination by the French.

Most of our groups who visit Grenada also visit the Grenadine island of Carriacou, located slightly north of the island.

TRAVEL

The two main airlines are British Airways and Virgin. The choice of carrier depends on the deal. Both of these carriers offer us a good choice of flights to other Caribbean islands.

Details of their schedules are:

  • British Airways ~ From London Gatwick several times weekly, departing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday,  travelling via Antigua.
  • Virgin Atlantic ~ From London Gatwick once weekly, departing on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, travelling via Tobago.
  • Other european airlines offer services via their own European gateway.

We also contract our seats on regular charter flights to give us a price edge.

FIXTURES

Having seen the success of sports tours to other Caribbean islands, Grenada may has probably felt it was losing out. The Government's Department of Sport brought in a sports consultancy headed by the cricketer, Alan Lamb, to advise them on how best they should organise their sports to receive overseas touring teams.

Alan put together an excellent proposal and structure which has been operating extremely well, apart from interference from hurricanes, since we first operated there in 2000.

We request all our fixtures through the Ministry of Sport. When we get them confirmed, we bring in Bentley Skeete, another  man who has lived in England before returning to the Caribbean.  He has looked after every one of our tours brilliantly, and our customers love him and his island.

One of Grenada's advantages is that you can get off island by taking the ferry to Carriacou where you can got for the day or even stay the night. Our customers really enjoy this.

ACCOMMODATION

We have recently sent a few groups to the Grenada Grand Beach Resort, situated on the beautiful Grand Anse Beach.

All the rooms have private bathroom facilities, fully controllable air-conditioning, cable television, telephone and a clock radio.

Numerous facilities at the resort include:

  • 300 ft. Fantasy pool, complete with waterfall
  • Jacuzzis set amongst lush tropical beach-side gardens
  • 60 ft. Sunset pool
  • Watersports such as sailing, diving, snorkelling, and kayaking
  • Tennis and golf
  • Poolside Fantasy Bar & Grill
  • Waterfront Restaurant, serving local and international cuisine

However, we constantly update our choice of resorts to keep our prices competitive.  A favourite alternative is the Coyaba Beach Resort, also on Grand Anse Beach.

WHAT TO DO

  • Day trips to Carriacou ~ stunning beaches, diving and extraordinary scenery
  • The Careenage ~ the picturesque inner harbour
  • Fort George ~ Built in 1705, the old fort guarded the capital through various wars over the years.
  • Spice factory at Gouyave
  • Grenada National Museum ~ Collection of artefacts of the island's history and culture
  • Catamaran Trips ~ Half and full day charters
  • Dongouldston Estate ~ Traditional plantation in the centre of the nutmeg and cocoa-growing region.
  • St George's Catholic Cathedral ~ The Gothic tower of St. George's, is the most visible landmark in the city. Built in 1818, the tower lends Grenada's capital a distinctively European character.
  • House of Parliament ~ Situated across Church Street from the cathedral is York House, purchased in 1801, housing the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Supreme Court.  Along with the neighbouring Registry, which was built in 1780, York house is a graceful example of early Georgian architecture.
  • Grand Etang Lake & Forest Reserve ~ The lake is over 1700 feet above sea level, and is surrounded with some of the island's most beautiful rainforest. Close to the lake is the visitors' center, which provides visitors with a fascinating introduction to the island's indigenous wildlife, vegetation, forestry, history, and culture.
  • Shopping ~ The best buys in Grenada are batik and screen printed textiles, locally made handicraft, leather craft, wood carvings and jewelry.
