Inspection Visit to the Caribbean, 2007

The Brief:

Catherine Birch and I visited several Caribbean islands in February 2007 to review the sports venues, to visit the accommodations we use for our tours, and to meet with our ground handlers in the various destinations.

Catherine visited Antigua, Anguilla and Barbados, while I went to St Lucia, Trinidad, St Kitts & Nevis and Grenada.

The Solution:

We viewed a wide variety of sports facilities on all the islands  visited.  Many of the cricket stadia were being used either as warm-up venues or for hosting matches for the Cricket World Cup, and these were of   good  quality, and   frequently  situated in beautiful surroundings.  As well as cricket, other venues visited offered facilities for netball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, athletics and swimming, and we saw several astro-pitches for soccer, as well as several multi-sport venues.

Between us, we looked at a wide range of accommodation across all the islands, some of which we use already and others that we would consider using in the future.  The facilities available within the hotels, as well as the entertainment available close by and the opportunities for sightseeing and excursions more than met our criteria.

Many of our ground handlers are ex-cricketers of international repute or are involved in an organisational capacity.  Consequently, at the time of travel, one or two of them  were engaged in activities pertaining to the Cricket World Cup.  However, where our contacts were unavailable, we were able to meet with their colleagues.  Catherine and I were both very confident that all our local handlers know exactly what we expect from them and are extremely competent when it comes to organising fixtures and looking after our tours on location.

The Result:

As this was our first time in the Caribbean on an inspection trip, Catherine and I found the visit extremely informative and hugely beneficial.  The highlight for me was St Kitts, which I feel offers huge potential for future business.  Catherine felt that Barbados is a great place for a tour, given that the island is fully geared up for tourism and has everything to offer.  However, her highlight was her visit to Anguilla, which she found to be an ideal location for a couple of days of  'r & r' at the end of a tour based on another island.
